  • Eschatology in Three Movies

Carson and Taryn wanted to talk theology on their last visit, in particular eschatology.  In a drive to Wallowa County we talked through three positions on end times: amillenial, premillenial, and postmillenial.  A few days later my husband suggested a different way of looking at things.  “Think of three well-known movies.  Each portrays one of these three positions.”  Much discussion ensued, but I’m asking you, “Which movie do you think illustrates which view?” Wait a minute!  Think of the entire Narnia series of books, specifically The Last Battle, not just the first movie. I found it to be a fascinating exercise.

  • OK, no one cares but I. Me? Which is it? In case you are curious: Left Behind is premillenial; Lord of the Rings postmillenial and Narnia amillenial.

  • Oh, Carol,

I missed the post and didn’t get to comment until you had already given the answers! He he he. I had “guessed” correctly. I knew that Left Behind was premillenial but I wasn’t altogether sure of the other two. I’ve not yet seen Narnia and the only book of the series I’ve read is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (which was years ago). Still, I was pretty sure the LOTR was postmillenial. Hooray for me!

At our last church, there was quite a little struggle going on between a group who were premillenial and the “officially” church doctrine which was amillenial. The pastor asked Terry what he thought about it. Terry’s answer? “I have a hard enough time trying to be faithful and live out the Christian life every day that I don’t have much time left to worry about the end times.” Not that we don’t appreciate the discussion of eschatology. We do. We just didn’t see why people in the church were working themselves up to the point of discord over the issue.

I think it is “No one cares but I” since you could complete the sentence, “No one cares, but I care.” I’m not a grammar expert, though, so don’t take my word for it!

    Blessings,

    Sandy
