Fine Art Friday – Kuroda Seiki
Barbara introduced me to the Japanese Impressionist artist Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924). He accompanied family members to Paris to study law. While there he had a change of heart and took up the study of painting. Y’all know how I love pictures of readers. Isn’t this a lovely find for Fine Art Friday? It’s called Reading (1891).
Here’s some more:
Maiko (1893)

Yes, I love your theme of paintings involving someone reading….and this artist is new to me.
How do you keep up with those participating in Fine Art Friday? I bump into *new* ones and wondering how they found out. I wish they would stop by your xanga
Thank you for your kind comments on mine.
Thanks for introducing this artist to me! I also love the quote on yesterday’s post–I think sometimes I need it glued to my forehead!

Love it! I love reading pics too. You should know that without me saying!

I love the array of colors, just for example, in the girl’s cheeks who’s reading the book. I know that’s part of what set impressionist painters apart from the rest, but it’s just wonderful to stare at the different parts of the painting and appreciate the color combinations!
You know it is funny , but I think he captures the colors and forms of the Caucasian faces better, much better than the Japanese girls’ face, she looks *so* not right(sorry for the ‘teen-speak’ there), while the others have a realness and vivacity to them.
My last trip to Japan, I took a jaunt to Kyoto at what was just the right time to catch various spring festivals and goings on. I saw several maiko hostessing a flower show, up close and personal. Kuroda’s ‘Maiko’ looks like he had French advisers ‘helping’ him. I know, it is Impressionism…Maybe he did some other Japanese subjects and I am reacting badly to this one. I check about and see.
Did you know that Cecely Mary Barker, who did many books on the Flower Fairy subject did a group of religious art prints for various customers? I have been looking about and have not had much success with finding those. Do you know of a source for prints, in general? I know you would like her work.
Me again…I popped over to Barbara’s blog and saw her Kuroda print there…very nice and the colors were just right for that subject… I will *have * to see more.
