  • Fine Art Friday – Rien Poortvliet

I became acquainted with Rien Poortvliet through browsing the shelves of the children’s section of my local library.  His rich illustrations and pencil sketches are earthy in tone and subject.  His sense of humor and appreciation for animals, both domestic and wild, animate his work.  Poortvliet is best known for his book Gnomes, which I don’t particularly care for.

I’m struggling with finding images to post.  I was sad to learn that he died of cancer in 1995.  Am I breaking copyright if he has died?   I wanted you to see the faces that he draws – I could look at them for long periods of time.

We have Noah’s Ark and He Was One of Us.  I’d like to get Dogs and Horses; I’d *love* to get Daily Life in Holland in 1566 and In My Grandfather’s House.  The prices are really high since they are out of print.  In my ideal world, I’d run across them at garage sales, in perfect condition for $3.00!!

In fact, I just clicked on Amazon used sales to buy the Farm Book  and The Book of the Sandman and the Alphabet of Sleep. After all, I have a little grandson to read to. The last little book is really a bargain.  If it’s as good as I expect it to be, I will make many, many purchases for future baby showers.

If you are interested and have time you can see 400 images here.

  • Oh, Carol, we have Noah’s Ark, too. Correction: youngest son has it. We gave it to him one year for Christmas when he was about ten.

I can spend hours looking at the pictures. I love the description of Farm Book. Might have to find it….

  • Fascinating sketches….I will check my library for anything illustrated by him, especially the one about life in Holland in 1566.

BTW Janie….every time I stop by Seasonalsoundings, my computer gets hung…something about Microsoft scripts….any advice?

  • Dana,
Last week when something went wrong at SS (I haveno idea what) and my sidebars went amiss, on a whim, I switched to Blogger’s new beta version. My computer, too, slows for a bit on loading SS, and I get a box message about scripts slowing the computer. I simply click the box (I don’t remember what it says, maybe “ok”) and everything is rosy again. Blogger said once you’ve switched you can’t go back. But I’ve found out that I can, and I may return to the old format if necessary. The easier to use sidebar posting boxes on the beta version are sooooo handy though. But if people get hung up while attempting to visit, what use are they?!

If Carol doesn’t mind (and I apologize Carol for using your comment box for other communication), can you let me know on occasion if you are able to ever get to SS by clicking the “ok” box about scripts? Readers will have to tell me you can’t get there.

    Thanks, Dana!
    Janie

  • We love his “Noah’s Ark” and have checked it out from the library enough to know we should own our own copy.

  • I’m back! I’ve been looking through those gazillion pics at Artcyclopedia. Check
    this one out.
    Isn’t that Aslan all over?!

  • Wow, Janie. It *is* Aslan! That is a glorious picture. BTW, to answer a question from Eusebius, yes, we are reading the whole book.

  • I don’t know if any on has the answer for my question but I would love a reply is it breaking copyright if I use his illustration for school project? I will surely credit and make it clear that illustration are by him.

  • @crazydelic - I *wish* I understood copyright laws. It’s complicated. Sorry.
