  • I love this. The first thing I noticed (beside that he was reading!) is his bulky, warm clothing and his bare feet.

  • I didnt even notice the bare feet.  Guess I need to work on my observation skills.

    I wonder if there is symbolic meaning to the bare feet?  Like the broken urn (loss of purity) in some of Bougereau’s subjects.

    We only know that he’s reading the Bible because of the title,   For that reason, I’d like to believe the bare feet are an indication that he is ready have his *washed by the reading of the Word*

    What could be more humbling?  Footwashing, I mean.  Have you ever participated in one of those ceremonies?  I havent.  Only the Primitive Baptists do around here….

  • Dana, I have participated in a foot washing ceremony once. The women were in one room and the men in the other. Humbling is the right word – it really took restraint to allow someone to do that.
