  • Too Funny For Words

I’m back from our church’s Family Camp, another weekend jammed packed with good things.  A group of moms sat together “talking shop” and the issue of modesty came up.  One mom argued that young girls “just don’t know what they are doing when they dress with tops too low and shorts too high.”  Another disagreed and thought girls know exactly what they are doing and want to provoke a response.

The question was posed: “Did you dress modestly when you were young?”  I will jump right in and admit that when I look back at some photos I shudder and wonder a) what I was thinking and b) why someone didn’t say something

This picture from 1979, for example.  The only reason I would voluntarily post a picture of me (or Curt) wearing shorts this short is because it is so stomach-clutching funny!  Matching shorts (guffaw), my husband’s tucked in shirt (snort), the white piping (giggle), and the pulled up socks (snicker).  Funny peculiar and funny ha-ha. Nerds of the Year award.  My brother-in-law has always had better taste in clothes than both of us combined, as evidenced in this picture.  Ay-yi-yi!!

Do you ever look back and wince?  Laugh?  Cry?  *grin*

  • I think I have a picture exactly like that…….excepting my shorts were blue/white!

Yup, I laugh and wince at times.  But everyone was wearing those gym shorts, Mom!

As for modesty, there’s a sensitive topic.   And I think both sexes need to be taught the rules for propriety and decorum.

  • You look adorable. And I am sorry, there is nothing WRONG with it. While we ought to teach the young women to be chaste (Titus 3) because of this present evil age, there are times when we need to chill out just alittle. There are times when a pair of shorts are completely appropriate, like at home. right now when it is in the 90′s! Still I agree with hiddenart re:both sexes and modesty.

  • Boy, does THAT picture bring back memories!  And yes, we ALL wore those shorts.  My daughters have told me they were deeply hurt by certain of my comments about what needed to be covered, with clothing that was not that tight.  I’m hoping they will look back on those days and laugh and/or moan, when they have to deal with THEIR daughters on the subject :)

  • We were just talking about the 70s/80s styles the other day. It came up because of NBA flash back reels…and man! have basketball shorts changed in the last 25 years.

But, it is even funnier to see the kids’ faces when they see their dad in skimpy shorts. The screams of laughter, the falling on the floor….they can hardly believe it is him. That and the fact that his hair didn’t get long, it got BIG, as in FRO big. They all just lose themselves in laughter.

We have one daughter who, in my opinion, is TOO concerned about modesty, and one who is up and coming to the teen years and will require more guidance in the other direction. It’s a never-ending discussion topic with boys 14 and 15 and a girl 16, that’s for sure. Esp. as the temps have been 100+ for days now. With high heat comes skimpy clothes.
