  • There and Back

Our group continues to expand like dough!
Relax. The gun on the far left is a paintball gun.

I had to get a profile shot of Carson, the guy who brings the kitchen sink.
I talked to him the day before the trip and told him I wouldn’t
be able to go because I had a bum shoulder.
“Mom, you have to come,” he protested. “I will go back to the
trail head and carry your pack in.”  And he did.  Thanks, Sonny.

The closest town is called Granite.

    This is Saturday morning.
It got down to around 40° Friday/Sat night.
Sunday morning we woke to raindrops.

Chris bought a new Coleman chair for the trip.
When he unpacked it at camp, it was a child’s chair!

    New sights: Seven mountain goats
New sounds: trees creaking that sounded like a baby crying
New touch: stuffing wet bags into the carrying bag
New thought: campfire smoke is a great organic deodorant

  • oh man, its been too many years since I’ve been backpacking. I miss it.

That is too funny about the chair… but why would he want to carry all that extra weight anyway? I guess I’m a wimp.

  • You are so funny!!!  Every time I think you are so full of wisdom and great thoughts, you pop out something like the deodorant comment!!!  And who are the 2 kids in the picture in the sleeping bags, that I don’t recognize?  Also, did Gavin stay home w/ Grandma and Grandpa?  Or did Jessie stay home, too?

  • You are so cool!

  • Nothing rejuvenates my hubby like a backpacking trip!

    Great photos.

  • Well, Deb, you smoked me out. True confessions and all. The hike takes less than an hour from trail head to campsite. Downhill on the way in, uphill (theoretically the packs are lighter after having eaten) on the way out. So we aren’t really nit-picky on weight.

Jess and Gavin were at a friend’s graduation in Portland. I asked Chris when he thought Gavin would be ready for the hike…maybe a few more years. That will be a blast.

Mel, the guy is Chris’s BIL Luke, and Rachel is Luke’s girlfriend. Luke is another son of mine. He has a place at all the family dinners when Carson comes home. One time Grandpa and Grandma wondered aloud if they’d need to include Luke in their will, heh heh.

  • What a neat trip, Carol! I have never had the opportunity to do a back-packing trip, as neither my parents, when I was growing up, or my husband later, was into anything like that. It sounds like such fun.

  • OH how fun! I love the chair.. LOL

  • Yes, the chair cracked me up, too .  I’ve never back-packed, either, but I’ve hiked a lot in my day.  Looks like a good time was had by all!

Ooh, my type of packpacking trip. But, that makes a lot of sense – I was wondering about all those axes and was thinking, “Gosh, I must be doing something wrong because we’ve never taken an axe backpacking.” LOL.

What a wonderful son you have to offer to do that for you. My husband carried my pack and his pack on my first trip ever, because I was so out of shape and dealing with altitude issues.

  • Elliot and I really cracked up about the little chair.  Love the picture.
